If your air handler and ducts live in a 140-degree attic, a radiant barrier can drop that attic temperature by 20 to 30 degrees and cut the load on your air conditioner all summer.
Heat moves three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation. R-value only measures resistance to conduction. In a Florida attic in August, the roof sheathing is at 160 degrees and it's radiating that energy downward onto your insulation and your ductwork. Insulation absorbs radiant heat and then re-radiates it. A low-emissivity foil surface doesn't — it reflects it back.
Field measurements in Florida attics consistently show a properly installed radiant barrier dropping peak attic air temperature by 20 to 30 degrees.
A radiant barrier only functions when it faces an open air space. Foil laid flat directly on top of attic insulation loses its reflective function almost entirely once dust settles on it, and it can trap moisture underneath.
The correct installation is stapled to the underside of the rafters or applied as foil-faced roof sheathing, with the reflective face looking into the open attic. That gap is what makes it work.
If your air handler and ductwork are in a vented attic — which describes a very large share of Florida homes — a radiant barrier is one of the highest-return upgrades available to you. You're taking the ambient temperature surrounding your ducts from about 135 degrees to about 110. Every foot of duct run is losing less, and the AC's total load drops meaningfully.
A radiant barrier is not a substitute for insulation and we won't sell it as one. If your attic is at R-11, you need insulation first. The radiant barrier is the multiplier on top of adequate R-value, not the replacement for it. Typical cooling savings from a radiant barrier alone in Florida run 8 to 12 percent — real money, but not the 40 percent some marketing claims.

Radiant Barrier Insulation pricing varies with square footage, access, existing conditions, and whether removal is required first. Most Florida projects fall in the $1.50–$5.00 per square foot installed range. Standard Insulation provides free written, itemized estimates statewide — call (561) 975-6204.
Reduces attic heat gain by up to 40% (radiant barriers are rated by emissivity, not R-value). In Florida's Climate Zone 1 attic assemblies must reach R-30, and in Climate Zone 2 R-38, with R-49 a common practical target, and we'll size the assembly to hit your code requirement or your performance goal.
